Dear Friends of Classics and Ancient History,

Monday, March 4, 2pm, School of Humanities Common Room, Mungo MacCallum Building Rm 822

Lucy Jackson (University of Durham)

Containing Multitudes. Psychoanalysis and the Ancient Greek Chorus

Abstract:
In multiple cultures across the globe today, there is a turn towards collective action and to the mobilisation of massed and anonymous voices, often facilitated by online networks and via social media. The pandemic provided a brutal reminder of our interdependence, and threw the uber-individualists concerned with missions into space or personal financial gain into sharp relief. At the same time, the questioning of traditional, vertical, or linear power structures is (and should be) intensifying. In this work-in-progress paper, I will begin to introduce and articulate why the ancient Greek chorus has unrealised potential, both as historical feature of ancient Greek cultures and as a political model and mode of agency in today's world, to speak to these pressing modern concerns. My focus will be on what we might gain from viewing the chorus through the lens of psychoanalytic theory, and with the psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion’s ideas of ‘containment’ in particular in mind.

Lucy Jackson is Humanities Research Centre / Centre for Classical Studies Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University and Associate Professor in Classics (ancient Greek Literature) Department of Classics and Ancient History
