Research Scholarships

Postgraduate Scholarship in Viral Proteomics

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably
qualified candidate to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in
viral proteomics; the project is to investigate viral/host cell
protein-protein interactions important for the replication of herpes
simplex virus; applicants should have an Honours 1 degree in Science;
applicants can be local or international students, however this
scholarship does not cover any tuition fees payable by international
students; $22,500pa; up to three years.

Closing Date: 4 January 2010

Radiation Therapy Scholarship

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably
qualified candidate to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in
radiation therapy, covering the broad areas of clinical, technological
and patient support research related to radiation therapy; applicants
should have a good undergraduate degree qualification, with or without
an honours qualification; applicants must be Australian citizens,
Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens; $22,500pa; up to
three years.

Closing Date: 4 January 2010

Post-fire availability of water and growth of woody shrubs and grasses
in sclerophyll forests and woodlands

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is on offer to undertake research
studies leading to a PhD in Agriculture; the project looks at fuel load
in understorey species in eucalypt forests and identifying bushfire
risks; applicants must have an Honours or Masters degree in science,
forestry, environmental science or closely related disciplines;
applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents
or New Zealand citizens; up to $30,000pa; up to three years.

Closing Date: 11 January 2010

Dynamics of litter-fall and fine fuels after fire in sclerophyll forests
and woodlands

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is on offer to undertake research
studies leading to a PhD in Agriculture; this project will look at
bushfire risk, specifically at the increase in annual litter-fall and
its contribution to the fine fuel load; applicants must have an Honours
or Masters degree in science, forestry, environmental science or closely
related disciplines; applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian
permanent residents or New Zealand citizens; up to $30,000pa; up to
three years.

Closing Date: 11 January 2010

Water use characteristics (tree hydraulics) of re-sprouting eucalypts in
Low and High Elevation Mixed Species Forests, north-east Victoria,
southern NSW and the ACT

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is on offer to undertake research
studies leading to a PhD in Agriculture; this project will quantify
whole-tree water use in sub-catchments that were burnt in 2003, 2007 and
2009 and will involve extensive fieldwork using a range of physiological
and meteorological approaches; applicants must have an Honours or
Masters degree in science, forestry, environmental science or closely
related disciplines; applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian
permanent residents or New Zealand citizens; up to $30,000pa; up to
three years.

Closing Date: 11 January 2010

Water use characteristics (leaf hydraulics) of eucalypts re-sprouting
after fire

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is on offer to undertake research
studies leading to a PhD in Agriculture; the project will focus on
leaf-level characteristics of a range of re-sprouting eucalypts in
sub-catchments in north-east Victoria that were burnt in 2003, 2007 and
2009 and will involve extensive fieldwork and will use a range of
techniques, including highly novel CT scanning, for quantifying leaf
anatomy and morphology; applicants must have an Honours or Masters
degree in science, forestry, environmental science or closely related
disciplines; applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian
permanent residents or New Zealand citizens; up to $30,000pa; up to
three years.

Closing Date: 11 January 2010

Greenhouse gas fluxes after fire

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is on offer to undertake research
studies leading to a PhD in Agriculture; this project looks at the role
of fire in fluxes of greenhouse gases from forest ecosystems and will
focus on developing process-level understanding of fluxes of methane and
CO2; applicants must have an Honours or Masters degree in science,
forestry, environmental science or closely related disciplines;
applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents
or New Zealand citizens; up to $30,000pa; up to three years.

Closing Date: 11 January 2010

Charcoal production during prescribed fire and its role in carbon
turnover

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is on offer to undertake research
studies leading to a PhD in Agriculture; this project will focus on
determining rates of black C production (biomass conversion) and at
black C dynamics in soils; applicants must have an Honours or Masters
degree in science, forestry, environmental science or closely related
disciplines; applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian
permanent residents or New Zealand citizens; up to $30,000pa; up to
three years.

Closing Date: 11 January 2010

PhD Scholarship on Road Assisted Ride Program for Motorcycle Riders

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is on offer to undertake research
studies leading to a PhD; the aim of this project is to evaluate a large
scale trial of an on-road rider assistance program in Victoria and will
focus on newly licensed motorcycle riders; applicants should hold an
appropriate Honours 1 or high 2A (or equivalent); applicants must be
Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or New Zealand
citizens; $25,000pa; up to three years.

Closing Date: 30 November 2009

The Australian Synchrotron Postgraduate Awards have been established to
promote awareness of the capabilities of the Australian Synchrotron and
to encourage and support outstanding postgraduate students to use this
exciting new research facility as part of their research project;
students will normally be based at the university in which they are
enrolled and will be expected to spend at least three weeks a year at
the Australian Synchrotron. awards will be offered as a top-up to
