Research Scholarships

Postgraduate Scholarship in Advanced Microscopy

For a student to undertake a PhD in the Australian Key Centre for
Microscopy and Microanalysis in collaboration with Imago Scientific
Instruments, USA; $24,851 pa; up to 3 years; this project aims to
determine the relationship between solute atmospheres at grain
boundaries and the rate of grain boundary migration during annealing in
HSLA steel and Al alloys (including nano-structured alloys); the project
involves the development of experimental techniques in advanced
microscopy, which will be the first of their kind, combining atom probe
tomography, focused ion beam technology and transmission electron
microscopy.

Closing Date:  15 December 2006

PhD Scholarship on Light Alloy Hybrids

This scholarship will provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis
for a research project leading to a PhD; the aim of this project is to
develop a modelling approach for the characterisation of laminated
sandwich structures formed by light metals. The vision at the basis of
the project is to move the property space of traditional light metal
materials outside its boundaries; applicants should have an H1 or 2A
degree in materials science or engineering or hold a Master degree;
applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents
or New Zealand citizens; up to $25,000.

Closing Date:  15 December 2006

Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) in Metallurgy and Microscopy

This scholarship will provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis
for a research project leading to a PhD at the University of Sydney in
the Australian Key Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis in
collaboration with BlueScope Steel; this project will investigate
microalloying additions known to be highly effective in conventional
steels (Ti, Nb, V, Al, Cu and Mo) with an emphasis on characterisation
of nanoscale microstructure using advanced microscopy techniques;
applicants should have an H1 or 2A degree in materials science and
engineering or mechanical engineering; applicants must be Australian
citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens;
$25,118 pa.

For a suitably qualified candidate with a good honours degree in science
to undertake research studies leading to a PhD; the project is to
investigate the role of respiratory viral infections in extracellular
remodelling; applicants must be an Australian citizen, Australian
permanent resident or New Zealand citizen; $20,000 pa; up to 3 years.
