Funding Body Name: The University of Sydney
Title of Funding Opportunity: Postgraduate Scholarship in Turbulent Combustion
Category: Research Scholarships
Recurring Opportunity: No
Description of Funding Opportunity:
Applications are invited from Honours Graduates in Science or Engineering
for a postgraduate scholarship leading to MER in Engineering. The
successful applicant will perform research on an ARC funded project aimed
at understanding the flow, mixing and combustion characteristics of
turbulent reacting and non-reacting flows. The candidate may chose one of
the following challenging projects: (i) a study of premixed flames in
vitiated a co-flow, (ii) premixed flame propagation past solid obstacles,
and (iii) reacting and non-reacting sprays.

This research is aimed at generating enhanced numerical tools to optimize
combustor designs. Both numerical and experimental investigations may be
conducted on each project. The combustion group at the University of Sydney
has an international reputation in the field of turbulent combustion and
laser diagnostics. The combustion laboratory is one of a handful of
facilities around the world with advanced laser diagnostics capabilities
such as PIV, LDV, PDA, Raman, Rayleigh, LIF. Modelling capabilities include
Large Eddy Simulations (LES), Probability Density Function (PDF) and
Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) approaches; as well as more standard RANS
based methods available from commercial codes.

The scholarship is valued at $22,000 per annum and available for one year
only. Extension to a PhD is possible subject to the availability of funds.
While international students can apply, preference should be given to
citizens and permanent residents of Australia according to ARC guidelines.
