University of Sydney Grants-in-Aid 2004
Grants-in-aid (GIA) are available to provide students with travel grants to 
support short-term periods of research overseas; applicants must be 
citizens or permanent residents of Australia; most grants are open only to 
full-time students enrolled in a research degree, although some are offered 
to undergraduates.  Individual grants vary in value and purpose with most 
approximately $1500.

Some GIA are open to applicants in any research area or faculty, however 
many awards are targeted at students in particular faculties, departments 
or research areas including:

Economics and Business; Conservatorium of Music; Medicine; Science; Sydney 
College of the Arts; Veterinary Science.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Structural Biology
Open to candidate with a good degree in science to undertake research 
studies leading to a PhD in structural biology; the project involves the 
use of biochemical and biophysical methods to investigate structural and 
functional aspects of the transcriptional regulator FOG-1; $18,484 pa; up 
to 3 years; applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of Australia.

Postgraduate Scholarship on Myopia in School Children
Available for current full-time student to assist in their completion of a 
research project leading to a PhD; the project is the Sydney Myopia Study, 
an epidemiological project examining the prevalence and risk factors for 
the development of myopia in school-aged children; $18,484 pa; 9 months 
with a possible extension of a further 3 months.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Bioleaching Nickel Laterite Ores
Open to candidate with a good Hons degree in science or engineering to 
undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Chemical Engineering; the 
project is to investigate and to delineate the mechanisms involved in 
biological leaching of nickel laterite ores; $18,000 pa; up to 3 years; 
citizens or permanent residents of Australia and international students* 
may apply for this scholarship. *Please note that this scholarship will not 
cover any tuition fees payable by international students.

Open to candidate with an Hons 1 or 2A degree in science to undertake 
research studies leading to a PhD in structural virology; the project is to 
investigate the structural basis of interaction of two viral proteins 
essential for the assembly of herpes simplex; $18,484 pa; up to 3 years;

Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Visual Neuroscience
Available to support on a full time basis for a research project leading to 
an MSc or a PhD; the project is to examine the role of cortico-cortical 
'feedback' connections in determining receptive field properties of 
neurones in mammalian visual cortex; $16,600 pa; 2-3 years.

Menzies Research Scholarship in the Allied Health Sciences
Open to full-time students in a research PhD program; applications from 
graduates in the disciplines of nursing physiotherapy, occupational 
therapy, speech pathology and clinical psychology are preferable but 
application from graduates of other allied health disciplines will also be 
considered; applicants should have completed the first stage of the PhD 
project and will take up the scholarship during 2005; $24,000 pa; tenable 
at an Australian tertiary institution; up to 2 years
