Hi all,

Here are the title and abstract for Helen Beebee's (Manchester) department seminar, this Wed Aug 19 at 1pm in the Muniment Room. See you there!

Title: Alternative Possibilities and Blameworthiness

Abstract:
Some standard incompatibilist responses to Frankfurt’s alleged refutation of PAP are really only defences of the claim that blameworthiness requires alternative possibilities (APs), and not of the claim that acting freely requires APs. (In particular: Copp’s ‘ought implies can’ defence, Widerker’s ‘W-defence’, and the flicker defence.)
Considered in this light, these defences really aren’t bad – and in particular the flicker defence is in much better shape than is standardly thought.
However, once these ‘incompatibilist’ defences are considered in this light, Frankfurt’s argument – qua objection to the view that alternative possibilities are required for acting freely –is left completely intact. Bad news for incompatibilists!
