How do experts develop and maintain their skills? This workshop brings together researchers from philosophy, psychology and education to consider how experts develop and maintain their high level skills, techniques and knowledge in a variety of domains: including places of work, sports and clinical settings. The workshop is funded by an ARC Discovery project Embodied Virtues and Expertise (Richard Menary Lead CI, David Simpson CI) and coincides with the visit of two distinguished researchers in philosophy and cognitive science: Professor Shaun Gallagher (Memphis) and Professor Dan Hutto (Hertfordshire), who are principal investigators on the project. Gallagher and Hutto’s work on embodied and enacted cognition, social cognition, agency and narrative will be brought into contact with the empirical work on skills development in sports, music, memory and organisations at the Centre for Elite Performance, Expertise and Training and the Centre for Cognition and its Disorders at Macquarie University.
Our speakers include:
• Professor Shaun Gallagher, Lillian and Morrie Moss Chair of Excellence in Philosophy, University of Memphis
• Professor Dan Hutto, Professor of Philosophical Psychology, University of Hertfordshire
• Dr. Wayne Christensen Research Fellow, Konrad Lorenz Institute
• Professor Bill Thompson, Head of Department (Psychology) and Director of the Centre for Elite Performance, Expertise and Training, Macquarie University
• Associate Professor Mark Wiggins (Psychology), Associate Dean of Research (Human Sciences) and member of the Centre for Elite Performance, Expertise and Training, Macquarie University
• Dr. Doris McIlwain, senior lecturer (Psychology) and member of the Centre for Elite Performance, Expertise and Training, Macquarie University
• Professor John Sutton, Deputy Director of Cognitive Science, Macquarie University
