Overview

"The 2018 Observational Techniques in Astronomy workshop, organised by the International Telescopes Support Office (ITSO) in conjunction with the Australian Astronomical Observatory (AAO) and Macquarie University (MQ), will be held from midday Monday April 30 to midday on Thursday May 3, 2018, at the AAO Headquarters in North Ryde, Sydney." This workshop is designed for the Australian community (especially for PhD students and early career researchers) to effectively maximise their use of the optical and infrared (OIR) astronomical infrastructure available to them.

In particular, this workshop will focus on:

  * the OIR astronomical facilities available to the Australian astronomical community, with emphasis on ESO and the AAT
  * observational techniques widely used in OIR Astronomy
  * data acquisition, calibrations, data reduction, data handling and data analysis techniques (specific to ESO and AAT) with dedicated hands-on tutorials and demo sessions
  * astronomy made easy with python and R
  *   upcoming astronomy infrastructure

We are pleased to announce that the ESO sessions will be facilitated by experts from ESO: Dr Lowell Tacconi-Garman (Deputy Head of the User Support Department), Dr Martino Romaniello (Head of the Back-end Operations Department) and Dr Wolfram Freudling (Head of ESO’s Science Data Products Group).
