      2018B Call for Magellan Proposals

Proposals for Australian access to the Magellan telescopes for Semester
2018B (mid-Jul 2018 to mid-Jan 2019) are due by:

*5:00pm AEST on Friday 6 April 2018**
*
Note that AAL and the Carnegie Institution for Science have agreed that
Semester 2018B will be the
last<https://mailman.sydney.edu.au/pipermail/asa/Week-of-Mon-20180212/004958.html>
in which Australian astronomers have guaranteed access to the Magellan
Telescopes. AAL will be providing funds sufficient to cover observer
travel funding to Australian Magellan users in 2018B.

The instruments normally available on the two Magellan telescopes are
listed on the ITSO Magellan instrumentation
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/t_VkCE8kz9tklnLRuNyFhM?domain=aao.gov.au> page, but applicants
should bear in mind the following for Semester 2018B:

  * A new CCD has recently been commissioned with the Planet Finding
Spectrograph. Contact Jeff Crane (crane - at - carnegiescience.edu) for
    the latest update before applying.
  * Instruments including MegaCam, M2FS, PFS, and PISCO will be
scheduled in 1 or more blocks during the semester, depending on demand.
  * There will be no MagAO run in 2018B.

In recent semesters demand for instruments mounted on the Clay telescope
has significantly exceeded that for instruments on the Baade telescope.
Applicants are encouraged to consider whether their science might also
be possible using the instruments on Baade (IMACS, FourStar, FIRE,
MagE), should their preferred instrument on Clay not be available due to
scheduling constraints.

Complete information about all Magellan instrumentation on offer, travel
funding, and the application procedure is available at

usage of Magellan please contact the AAO's International Telescopes
Support Office (itso at aao.gov.au).

A separate call for Blanco proposals in Semester 2018B with a 29 March
2018 deadline was issued earlier - please see

proposals for Period 102 (Oct 2018 - Mar 2019) are due by 28 March 2018
- see https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/ijXcCK1qJZtZD9O3cApjQJ?domain=aao.gov.au.
