Colonial Astronomy in Australia
MELBOURNE OBSERVATORY 150TH ANNIVERSARY
Sunday 24 November 2013
Melbourne Observatory, Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne
To mark the 150th anniversary of the Melbourne Observatory, a one-day seminar "Colonial Astronomy in Australia" will be held on Sunday 24 November, hosted by the Astronomical Society of Victoria with support from the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.
The 150th anniversary celebrations will be formally launched on Saturday afternoon, 23 November, by the Governor of Victoria, His Excellency the Honorable Alex Chernov, AC, QC. Events will include tours, activities and entertainment, along with an historic re-enactment recounting the founding of the Observatory and its work.
The Melbourne Observatory held global significance and was vital to the early development of Melbourne and Victoria during the second half of the 19th century. It was home to the Great Melbourne Telescope installed in 1869, and was for decades the largest fully steerable telescope in the world.
The seminar will explore the significance of colonial astronomy in Australia, including the role of women in colonial astronomy. It will discuss the heritage value of the Observatory, along with the meteorological and geophysics work carried out there.
An update on the work being carried out to restore the Great Melbourne Telescope will also be presented. This project is a collaboration between Museum Victoria, the Astronomical Society of Victoria and the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.
