Dear Friends of Classics and Ancient History,

Our University of Sydney Research Seminar in Classics and Ancient History continues with seminar #10

Thursday, October 19th, 4pm (CCANESA Boardroom)

Robin Kreutel (University of Cambridge)

The Conception of Space in Plautus' Comedies

Abstract
My talk starts from the premise that the production of Plautus’ comedies coincides with what has been described as a revolution of Rome’s spatial imaginary, resulting in unprecedented territorial expansion and the redefinition of the boundary of the pomerium. In Roman culture, only specially authorized individuals had the power to divide space by religiously sanctioned boundaries, and the use of space in the fast-changing city of Rome was hotly contested among vying aristocrats striving to leave a mark on its appearance. With the advent of literature in Rome, a new medium enters the scene, which gives non-citizen and lower-class writers an opportunity to distinguish themselves. Plautus’ palliata-comedies offered him the license to mock a wide range of Roman cultural practices. I will focus on the passages that deal with the culturally specific construction of space in Rome, and track Plautus’ creative and irreverent representation of them within the novel medium of literature.

Biography
Robin Kreutel is a PhD student at Darwin College, Cambridge. He is working on a dissertation entitled ‘Play in the Roman imagination’, in which he traces a discourse of play in republican Latin literature from Plautus via Lucilius to Cicero. Broadly speaking, his research combines the close reading of ancient texts with sociologically and anthropologically based reconstructions of Rome’s political culture. Before beginning his PhD, Robin trained as a teacher in Latin, English, and Psychology in Germany.
