Dear Friends of Classics and Ancient History,

As we move deeper into Autumn, we are delighted to invite you to our next Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA online research seminar for 2023.

Our program continues

March 30th (4pm AEST/UTC+11) with

James Tan (University of Sydney)

“Economic History and the Fall of the Roman Republic.”

Papers this semester will be presented either on campus live streamed via Zoom or via Zoom only. The on-campus location will always be the CCANESA Boardroom, Level 4, Madsen Building (F09), Camperdown/Darlington campus, unless otherwise indicated.

Abstract:
For decades, the standard explanation for the Roman Republic’s fall argued that (1) imperial profits led to small farms being bought by elites, (2) Marius opened military service to proletarians, and (3) these landless soldiers overthrew the Republic in exchange for land. Today, none of those claims survives intact. Yet, no model of the economy’s role in destabilising the Republic has replaced the old orthodoxy. It is worth exploring how the current understanding of the economy could contribute to our understandings of political change. This paper will offer the first sketches of how the most recent scholarship of Rome’s dynamic economy can produce a very different history of political failure.

Biography:
James Tan is Senior Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney.
