Dear Friends of Classics and Ancient History,
We happily invite you to our next Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA online research seminar for 2023. Our program continues
Thursday, March 16th at 4pm, (AEST UTC +11)
Samuel Wessels (University of Sydney/Macquarie University)
“Heavy Eyes” in Septuagint 1 Kingdoms 3:2 and Euripides’ Alcestis
Please also note: this seminar will be on campus face-to-face in the CCANESA Boardroom, Level 4, Madsen Building (F09), Camperdown/Darlington campus. There is a zoom option, but you are cordially invited to join us in person, if possible, where light refreshments follow the presentation. We’re very much hoping to restore the spirit of the seminars before the pandemic disrupted our lives and would love to see you there. The on-campus location will always be the CCANESA Boardroom, unless otherwise indicated.
Abstract:
Septuagint Kingdoms, the Greek translation of Samuel–Kings, has an ambiguous linguistic reputation. While scholars sometimes note natural linguistic features, its literal translation style is typically emphasised. This ambiguity has apparently caused several scholars to misinterpret βαρύνω in Septuagint 1Kingdoms 3:2. When examined against other evidence, notably Euripides’ Alcestis, Kingdoms is shown to use a natural though poorly attested expression meaning “go blind.” This paper demonstrates the natural idiom of 1 Kingdoms 3:2 and shows its value in refining our understanding of other Greek texts. More broadly, it promotes the reading of the Septuagint against the wider history of the Greek language.
Biography:
Samuel Wessels is the Kevin Lee Teaching fellow at the University of Sydney. He completed his undergraduate and master’s thesis at Macquarie University. His PhD research focuses on reading the Greek of the Septuagint books of Kingdoms in the context of the wider history of the Greek language..
