Dear Friends,
Our Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA online research seminar series continues on
Thursday, May 12th at 4pm, (AEST UTC/GMT +10) with
Greta Hawes (Harvard University)
"Mythic world-building in Ps-Plutarch’s On Rivers."
Abstract:
Greek myth is full of contradictions and variants; what gives it its basic unity is that all of the stories take place within a mythic storyworld with agreed norms. But what happens when an author decides to push the boundaries of what is acceptable in myth-telling and to engage in mythic world-building that little respects established tradition? This is the question that confronts us as we read Ps-Plutarch’s unusual creation, On Rivers. This text purports to explain how natural landmarks got their name by supplying ‘mythical’ stories which are entirely invented in some cases, and radical re-imaginings in others. This seminar will thus explore how creative invention works in the conventional storyworld of myth, and why On Rivers strikes us as quite different storytelling mode in spite of its claims to authority.

Presenter biography:
Dr Greta Hawes is Research Associate at the Center for Hellenic Studies. Her research focusses on Greek myth. She is particularly interested in the hermeneutic traditions that arose in antiquity to explain mythic traditions, and the ways the Greeks used stories to make sense of the landscapes around them. She is author of Rationalizing myth in antiquity (OUP, 2014) and Pausanias in the world of Greek myth (OUP, 2021), and editor of Myths on the map (OUP, 2017). For the past few years she has worked with Prof. Scott Smith to create MANTO, a dynamic dataset of Greek myth. She also directs Canopos, an open access repository for peer-reviewed translations of mythographic texts.
