Dear Friends,
A reminder that our first Classics and Ancient History/CCANESA online research seminar for Semester 2, 2021 will be held this afternoon at 4pm.
(August 19th, 4pm, AEST UTC/GMT +10)
Bob Cowan (University of Sydney).
Dr. Cowan will present his paper: “The Lay of the Land: Conquest, Incest, and Ecofeminism in Lucan and Statius.”
Abstract:
Ecofeminism engages with the association of women and nature, sometimes embracing their association and championing them in opposition to men and culture, sometimes challenging the association as itself part of the patriarchal discourse. I have recently explored how Virgil’s Georgics can be read through a variety of ecofeminist lenses, as a poem which shares ecofeminism’s own complexities and contradictions. Ovid’s Metamorphoses offers a predictably Protean picture of feminized nature and naturalized women. This paper will approach the two great civil war poems of the first century CE from an ecofeminist perspective. Both Lucan’s Bellum Ciuile and Statius’ Thebaid depict a male aggressor asserting dominance over land that is not only feminized but maternalized. Caesar’s invasion of Italy and Polynices’ of Boeotia are acts simultaneously of internecine violence and of incestuous violation. However, the prominence of ‘real’ women in both poems forces the reader to confront the realities of political and sexual violence underpinning the metaphorical system.
