Research Scholarships

Postgraduate scholarship in computational mechanics
Funding is provided for a student pursuing a Doctorate Degree to research the three-dimensional simulation of concrete structures until failure. This research will aim at developing a computational framework based on the discrete crack approach that can be efficiently used in engineering. Applicants must have a good degree in engineering and be interested in structural engineering, computational and fracture mechanics, and preference will be given to the applicants with relevant experience in computational mechanics, fracture mechanics, and development of formulations for simulating the behaviour of brittle and quasi-brittle materials. Funding is valued at the APA rate ($26,288 per annum tax exempt) for up to 3 years.

PhD Scholarship in regulatory safety advisories on medicines
A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Pharmacy. This student will work on a project to compare regulatory safety advisories on medicines in Canada, Australia, the United States (US), and the European Union (EU) over a 10-year period, with the aim of identifying factors that lead to effective risk communication. Applicants must have a first class honours degree (or H1 equivalent result e.g. MPhil) in pharmacy, epidemiology, pharmacology, biomedical science or equivalent four-year health science discipline, and should also have training or experience in a relevant field such as public health, health informatics, health services research or pharmacoepidemiology. Applicants must also be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens. Funding is valued at the APA rate ($26,288 per annum tax exempt) for up to 3 years.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Electrical Engineering
A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Electrical Engineering. The aim of the international project is to derive high-fidelity 3D audio headphone filters from photos and/or 3D scans of ears. The applicant must have a first-class honours degree or equivalent in mathematics, science or engineering, and be willing to work both at the University of Sydney and at the Université Paris 5 – René Descarte. Applicants should have a strong mathematics background, an interest in statistical shape analysis and computational acoustics. A stipend of $25,406 per annum is available to domestic and international students for up to 3 years. This scholarship does not cover any tuition fees payable by international candidates.

The aim of this project is to design efficient algorithms that compute provably good universal solutions for scheduling on an unreliable machine. Interactive Driving Simulation Laboratory Postgraduate Scholarship
A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good degree in traffic engineering or transport planning to undertake research studies leading to a PhD. The project, funded by the Australian Research Council, is to investigate travel choice behaviour using interconnected driving simulators. Applicants should have a background in discrete choice theory and methods as well as transport planning or traffic engineering. Open to domestic and international students, however the scholarship does not cover any tuition fees payable by international students. Valued at $26,288 per annum for up to three years.

Postgraduate Scholarship A in Archaeology
A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good honours degree in archaeology to undertake research studies leading to a PhD. The project is to investigate the form and variability of backed artefacts in Eastern Australia and to build a dataset for phylogenetic analysis. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens and should have knowledge of lithic analysis, with experience and particular interest in studying Australian Holocene assemblages containing backed artefacts, and with experience in the diagnosis and description of thermal alteration in Australian lithic materials. Valued at $25,406 per annum for up to three years.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Geotechnical Research
A full time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good honours degree in engineering to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in geotechnical engineering. The project is to investigate the susceptibility of bulk ore cargoes in ships experiencing large cyclic loads, from wave action, to liquefaction. Applicants should have an interest in computational soil mechanics, have experience in programming, an understanding of unsaturated soil mechanics, and of the response of soil to cyclic loading. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens. Funding is valued at the APA rate ($26,288 per annum tax exempt) for up to three years.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Computational Nanoscience
A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in theoretical chemistry. The project will use computer simulations to study nanoparticle interactions and self-assembly in the presence of interfaces, with relevance to designing new materials for filtration, sensing and solar energy capture. Applicants should have a First class Honours degree (or equivalent) in the general area of physical chemistry or chemical physics with experience in computational research. Also open to international students subject to conditions, and this scholarship does not cover any tuition fees payable by international candidates. Funding is valued at the APA rate ($26,288pa in 2016) for up to 3 years. Students that are able to obtain their own scholarship will be eligible for a top-up of up to $7,500 per annum.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Geodynamics/Plate Tectonics/Morphodynamics
A scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with an MSc or Honours degree in geology or geophysics to undertake research studies leading to a PhD. The project focuses on understanding long-term landscape evolution through the interaction between mantle processes, plate tectonic processes and surface processes.  International students will also be considered. Funding is valued at the APA rate ($26,288pa in 2016), up to 3 years. This scholarship does not cover any tuition fees payable by international candidates although exceptional international applicants may be considered for a fee award.
