NEWS ITEM: All students are invited to attend the forum "Research: What
is it? Who decides?", which will be held on Friday 31 October from 1.00
to 2.30 pm in the professorial board room, Main Quadrangle, Camperdown
Campus. 

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki will be moderator at this event presented by the
Academic Board and chaired by Associate Professor Jillian Kril of the
PhD Awards Sub-Committee. Speakers from a broad range of disciplines
will be tackling the question of what constitutes research. There will
be plenty of opportunity for audience participation in this forum aimed
at promoting discussion of the nature of research and scholarship within
the University. 

A light lunch will be provided from 12.30pm, for a 1pm start. For
catering purposes, please RSVP by midday Wednesday 29th October to Ms
Amy Griffiths (A.Griffiths at secetariat.usyd.edu.au), who can also provide
information about the event

Research Scholarships

 

Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) on the Role of Arts Education
in Academic Motivation, Engagement, and Achievement

This scholarship is funded by an ARC Linkage-Projects and is for a
full-time
PhD in the effect of arts education on student motivation, engagement
and achievement in selected primary and secondary schools; applicants
should have an Honours 1 or 2A degree (or equivalent Masters degree) in
education and experience as an arts educator, and must be Australian
citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens;
$26,140 p.a. in 2008 (tax exempt) for up to three years; please note
that this scholarship is conditional on the University signing an
agreement with the Partner Organisation(s) named in the grant.

Epidemiological investigations into the 2007 equine influenza outbreak
in Australia

A full-time postgraduate PhD scholarship is available for a suitably
qualified candidate with a bachelor's degree in animal or veterinary
science to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in veterinary
science (epidemiology); the project is to investigate the
characteristics of the 2007 equine influenza (EI) outbreak in Australia
in order to improve our understanding of the factors contributing to the
spread of the outbreak and contribute to preparedness for future
incursions of animal diseases in Australia; applicants must be
Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand
citizens; $25,000pa for up to three years.

Master of Philosophy/ PhD Scholarship in Bioinformatics

This scholarship is funded by the Faculty of Medicine and will provide
support on a full time basis for research leading to the award of Master
of Philosophy; the objective of the research project is to develop
bioinformatics algorithms and establish tools to study non-coding RNAs;
applicants should have, or be expecting to complete in 2008, an Honours
Class 1 degree from an Australian University (or equivalent) in
bioinformatics with strong programming skills in PERL, Java or
equivalent; applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent
residents, or New Zealand citizens; from $24,851pa for up to one year.

Overseas Scholarships

 

Finnish Government Scholarship Pool 2009 - 2010

The Finnish Government offers scholarships to Australians for
post-graduate studies, research and teaching for 3-9 months at a higher
education institution or public research institute in Finland;
scholarship includes a monthly allowance of EUR 1,200- sufficient for
one person; to be eligible the applicant must intend to pursue
post-graduate studies as a visiting student, have established contact
with the Finnish receiving institution before applying,  have a letter
of invitation from the academic supervisor in Finland, have earned at
least a Master-level degree before applying,  not have spent more than
one year already at a Finnish higher education institution, and be able
to give proof of sufficient skills in speaking and writing the language
needed in study/research.
