The University of Sydney Travelling Scholarships
Applications are invited from graduates or graduands of the University of
Sydney who are of not more than four years standing from qualifying for the
first degree appropriate to the proposed course of study overseas.
Scholarships shall normally be awarded to enable scholars to enrol in an
overseas university to undertake studies or research. Applicants must be
Australian citizens or permanent residents. Scholarship conditions vary but
usually include an annual stipend of $9,000, up to $6,500 to assist with
fees, and supplementation of up to $2,000 to cover the cost of airfares.
Some scholarships are offered for specific disciplines or places of study,
however there are also general awards.

Please note: Postgraduate research students intending to undertake short
research projects overseas as part of their candidature at the University
of Sydney will not be considered for Travelling Scholarships and should
apply for a Grant-in-Aid (applications open 2 April).

Postgraduate Scholarship in Bio-inorganic Chemistry
Open to candidate with a good Hons degree in chemistry to undertake
research studies leading to a PhD in Chemistry; the project involves either
the development of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) or the synthesis of
nanomolecular metal-containing macrocycles for encircling DNA; $18,484 pa;
up to 3 years; applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of Australia.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Computational Biophysics
Available for 1 year to carry out research in computational biophysics; the
project is to
investigate the effects of temperature dependence in biomolecular
processes; applicants should be accepted to the postgraduate program at the
School of Physics; $11,090 pa.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Improving the Modelling of Wood/Water
Relationships During Kiln Drying and Reconditioning of Softwoods
Available for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project leading
to a PhD; the project aims to develop new understanding of the
relationships between water and the different components of wood during the
drying and reconditioning of softwood timber; applicants should have an Hon
1 or 2A degree in chemical engineering; $25,000 pa; applicants must be
Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Advanced Gratings
Open to graduates in science with a good Hons degree for the project on the
development of
advanced gratings with properties that are currently not available today;
$23,886 pa; up to 3 years for a PhD; should there be several candidates of
equal merit, qualifications and experience, then preference will be given
to Australian citizens or permanent residents; the successful candidate[s]
should enrol by 31/03/04.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships in Electron Microscopy
Open to candidates with a good Hons or Masters degree in science or
engineering to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in electron
microscopy; the project involves using electron microscopy methods to map
the structure, chemistry, bonding and electronic structure at the atomic
scale; $23,886 pa; up to 3 years.

The Plant Nutrition Trust Awards 2004
Alf Anderson Award - Applicants should be actively involved in work in any
of the areas of plant nutrition mentioned above.
Sam Tisdale Award - Applications should have a strong emphasis on sulfur
nutrition of plants.
The amount of each award will depend on circumstances, but is likely to be
under $2000; applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents
based in Australia, except that for the Sam Tisdale Award, Australian
citizens may sponsor candidates from Asia and the south west Pacific region.
