University of Sydney Grants-in-Aid 2002
Most grants-in-aid provide students with travel grants to support
short-term periods of research overseas; mostly open only to full-time
students enrolled in a research degree, although some are offered to
undergraduates; must be citizens or permanent residents of Australia.
Individual grants vary in value and purpose with most approximately $1500.

University of Sydney Postgraduate Research Support Scheme (PRSS) 2002
The PRSS is introduced by the University to provide support for enrolled
postgraduate research students for expenses in connection with presenting a
paper or poster in conferences, visit to use specialist facilities or to
learn specialist techniques, purchase of specialist books, software or
minor computer equipment. An "Information for Students" document which
gives details of the PRSS is available

process is administered by individual Departments or Schools (in some cases
Faculties). Eligible applicants should check with their School or
Department Office, Postgraduate Coordinator or Faculty Postgraduate Office
on when applications open.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Structural Biology
Open to candidates with good Honours degree in science; PhD project
investigates (a) the structural basis for mode of action of a superantigen
from Yersina pestis and (b) the use of zinc binding domains as protein
pharmaceutical scaffolds; must be Australian citizens or permanent
residents; renewable for up to 3 years; $17,609pa.

Postgraduate Scholarship on Visual Impairment in an Older Population
Open to candidates with Honours 1 or 2A in Medicine, enrolled in Masters of
Medicine (Opthalmology) for 2002; project involves measuring visual acuity,
performing standardised refraction, applanation tonometry and visual field
tests on participants in Blue Mountains Eye Study; must be citizens or
permanent residents of Australia; 1 year possible further year extension;
$26,188pa.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Ceramic Metal Composite Materials
Open to candidates with degree in materials engineering (preferably
metallurgy or ceramic engineering); project involves research into
fabrication and analysis of ceramic-metal functionally graded materials;
must be Australian citizens or permanent residents; renewable to 3 years;
$17,609pa

Honours Scholarships in Porphyrin Chemistry
Open to suitably qualified candidates undertaking honours science degree in
porphyrin chemistry; projects involve synthesising (a) porphyrin analogues
with the potential to inhabit gingivitis; (b) porphyrin building towards
the construction of supramolecular lattices used for molecular electronics;
(c) bis-porphyrin analogues used for molecular recognition studies; 3
scholarships at $1,500pa; must be Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarships in Law
Open to Australian postgraduate students; one or two scholarships in Law
tenable in the United Kingdom commencing October 2003; includes return
fares and substantial emoluments; academic excellence is of primary
importance: selection committee will seek individuals who are likely to
attain prominence in Australia demonstrated by their record of leadership,
extra-curricular activities and interest in the service of others; tenable
for one or two academic years.

PhD Fellowship Molecular Basis of Plant Development and Environmental
Interactions
The Max-Planck Institute for Breeding Research together with partner
institutions in Cologne, Poland, France and Hungary invite applications
from candidates with Masters or equivalent in Biological Sciences for one
PhD fellowship to be carried out in France, Germany, Hungary or Poland;
amount not specified and may be up to three years.

Victoria Fellowships
Established to recognise the potential of scientists, engineers and
innovators early in their careers; open to postgraduate research degree
students nearing the completion of their studies; fellows receive travel
grants of up to $15,000 to undertake short-term overseas study missions to
facilitate their career development and enable them to develop a
potentially commercial idea or undertake specialist training not available
locally.
