Norm Emergence from Cognitive Biases and Cultural Transmission

Abstract: It’s important to distinguish between imprudent acts and impermissible ones.  Picking a flower next to a rattlesnake is imprudent, whereas picking a flower from your neighbor’s garden is impermissible. Although these are distinct kinds of judgments, we propose that cultural evolution can lead populations from judgments of imprudence to judgments of impermissibility via pedagogical and cognitive biases amplified by cultural transmission. We find support for this hypothesis with a set of transmission chain studies.

Bio: Shaun Nichols is Professor of Philosophy at Cornell University. He works at the intersection of philosophy and psychology and has published numerous articles and several monographs in the area, including Rational Rules: Towards a Theory of Moral Learning (Oxford University Press, 2021).
