Dear colleagues,

I hope you're well.

Please see details about an upcoming event about the Indigenous Voice.

SYDNEYSIDERS, your attention please!

The Centre for Global Indigenous Futures and the Centre for Agency, Values,
and Ethics (CAVE) are pleased to invite you to 'The Voice: beyond Yes and
No'.

Just a few days ago, South Australia became the first state to enact an
Indigenous Voice to (state) Parliament. Similar efforts are underway in
other states. And later this year, it is expected that Australians will
vote in a referendum on whether to enshrine a Voice to Parliament in the
federal constitution. Most discussion of the prospect of the federal Voice
have addressed the question whether there should be a Voice and have fallen
into advocacy for either the 'yes' or 'no' answer. Much less has been said
about other important questions. Why might various constituencies support
or oppose the Voice? What powers, responsibilities, and structure would be
desirable in the Voice, on the assumption that it will come into existence?
Who gets to speak via the Voice, and how are these representatives chosen?
Our panellists will address these difficult questions, bringing to bear
their expertise and local knowledge. The aim of the panel is to move beyond
just 'yes' and 'no' and begin to grapple with the ethical and political
complexities underlying the current debate.

This event is being held in room 2425 at Macquarie University City Campus,
123 Pitt Street on Wednesday, April 12th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Light
refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the event.
