Speaker: Heikki Ikäheimo (UNSW Sydney)

Abstract: In this talk I will present some of the central ideas of my book Recognition and the Human Life-Form—Beyond Identity and Difference. The basic argument of the book is that “recognition” (Anerkennung) in several conceptually interrelated senses of the term is a central ontological constituent of a life-form which all human societies or all particular forms of human co-existence are specifications of. Furthermore, not only is recognition ontologically constitutive of this general life-form—call it the human life-form or the life-form of human persons—, certain modifications of it also constitute a “fundamental ethics” in the sense of immanent ethical ideals.

If successful, the framework articulated provides discursive means for debating what makes social life better or worse across cultures, and tools for immanent social critique not bound up with this or that culturally specific evaluative framework or normative order. Such anthropological universalism—a philosophically sound articulation of the idea of common humanity—is particularly important at a time when increasingly dangerous rifts are appearing both within and between nations and cultures.

Bio: Heikki Ikäheimo is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at UNSW Sydney. His publications include the monographs Self-Consciousness and Intersubjectivity (2000), Anerkennung (2014), and Recognition and the Human Life-Form—Beyond Identity and Difference (2022), the edited collections Dimensions of Personhood (2007), Recognition and Social Ontology (2011), Handbuch Anerkennung (2021), and Recognition and Ambivalence (2021), as well as numerous articles and book chapters.
