The capacities of the honey bee brain

Andrew B. Barron (MQ)

Date: Tuesday, 4th of October
Time: 13:00 - 14:00
Venue: W6A 107, Macquarie University

ABSTRACT: The honey bee brain is minute: about 1 cubic millimetre in volume for the central brain, and containing less than a million neurons. And yet remarkable claims have been made for the behavioural capacities of bees. These include abstract concept learning, emotion-like behaviour and a basic form of awareness. Here I will review how the bee brain is able to support these behavioural capacities from a mechanistic and comparative neurobiological perspective.
