Lunchtime Seminar Series

Professor Paul E. Griffiths, Professor of Philosophy and Associate Academic Director, Humanities and Social Sciences, Charles Perkins Centre.

The ‘Darwinian’ approaches to medicine that emerged in the 1990s failed to convince most medical researchers and practitioners of the need to adopt an evolutionary perspective on health and disease. Though evolutionary biology has not had the profound, transformative effect on medical research and practice envisaged by its founders, the basic idea of integrating evolutionary thought into medicine remains attractive to many.

In this lecture, Professor Paul Griffiths distinguishes different ways in which evolutionary theory might contribute to better biomedical research, different fields of research in which an ‘evolutionary heuristic’ might operate, and discusses why that heuristic might be of more value in one field rather than another.

Professor Paul E. Griffiths, Professor of Philosophy and Associate Academic Director, Humanities and Social Sciences, Charles Perkins Centre. Paul is leading the centre's work on integrating biomedical research with research on the wider social and political arrangements that provide the context for the lives and health of individual people.
