All welcome.

Friday 6 Dec, 1.30-3.00pm
Dept of Cognitive Science, Macquarie Uni, Australian Hearing Hub level 3,
seminar room 3.610.

Prof Nicole Muller, Chair of the Dept of Communication Disorders at Uni of
Louisiana Lafayette http://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/~mxm2092/
“Thoughts on distributed thinking in dementia”
It is (probably) quite uncontroversial that a lot of thinking, reasoning,
remembering and learning does not happen in individual, unaided brains, but
is distributed between multiple brains and artifacts, and situated in
interactive contexts, often conversations. On the other hand, assessments
of cognitive and language functioning in dementia (as well as other
cognitive-communicative impairments), tend to focus on decontextualized
tasks that strongly privilege ‘intracranial’ cognition. While conversation
has long been recognized as a prime site for the analysis of how people
with dementia interact, build and manage social relationship, there is to
date comparatively little work that looks at conversational interaction as
a cognitive activity. Based on how a woman with dementia negotiates the
task of ‘getting to know’ a stranger in a conversation, I would like to
share some thoughts on thinking in dementia. The long-term goal of the
current research agenda is the establishment of more ecologically valid
evaluation procedures of dementia severity.

(NB this talk clashes with one session of the evolution of language
workshop on the same day

there were no other scheduling options).
