The arrow of chance

It's often claimed that the past (unlike the future) cannot be chancy. I'll  
argue that past chanciness is in fact possible, in cases of backwards  
causation: if a future chancy event has effects in the past, then those  
effects can themselves be chancy. (As an illustration, I'll recount the  
notorious ORACLE experiments of Professor Retrograde.) Embracing past  
chanciness leads us to a new view of chance, according to which the arrow  
of chance is linked to the arrow of causation, rather than to the arrow of  
time.
