Title: Paul Griffiths (University of Sydney)
Since Ruth Millikan's influential 1984 book there has been a consensus that  
many of the distinctions philosophers wish to make using the concept of  
function can only be made with Millikan's historically defined concept  
of 'proper function'. Here I will argue that, precisely because it is  
historical in nature, Millikan's concept cannot do many of these jobs and,  
more surprisingly, a concept of function defined in terms of present causal  
powers can do many of these jobs.
