Dear everyone,

Wednesday philosophy seminar series at the University of Sydney. Please
note that the talk will take place at 4:00 in the afternoon, rather than
the usual 3:30.
Best,
Greg Strom
Being truthful or untruthful to oneself : Remarks on Sartre and Cavell
Radicalizing Husserl’s critique of the so-called self-transparency of the
ego, Sartre emphasized its opacity and stressed the importance of
truthfulness as a moral condition of self-knowledge. Describing and knowing
oneself is then not a matter of knowledge but of authenticity : it requires
a moral commitment to oneself that is always likely to be compromised by
bad faith. I argue that the role this concept of truthfullness plays in
Sartre's analysis of the self presupposes a refined and disguised form of
self-transparency that reintroduces some of the difficulties Husserl was
attempting to rule out, and that a better account of the self can be
sketched on the basis of Cavell's remarks on autobiography.
