Dear everyone,

Samuel Baron will present the talk "Time and Mathematical Explanation" -- a
joint work with Mark Colyvan -- on Wednesday, October 31, at the University
of Sydney, not on Wednesday, October 30, as I claimed in an earlier email.

*Time and Mathematical Explanation*

The grandfather paradox arises when one travels back in time and tries to
assassinate one’s own grandfather, thereby bringing it about that one was
never born. Lewis showed that the grandfather paradox is no paradox at all:
every such assassination attempt fails and, despite initial appearances,
there is nothing mysterious about these failures. We develop an analogy
between Lewis’s solution to the grandfather paradox and mathematical
explanations of physical facts. We use this analogy to shed light on both
the temporal and mathematical cases.

*When*
Wed 30 Oct 2012 15:30 Eastern Time - Melbourne, Sydney
*Where*
The Refectory, Main Quadrangle
Best,
Greg Strom
