Call for Nominations – Honorary Fellows and Career Medals
Deadline: February 24
2023 Honorary Fellows of the Metabolomics Society

An Honorary Fellowship is a significant lifetime award granted by the Metabolomics Society to exceptional members of our community. Commissioned in 2012, and with up to two awards each year, the Board of Directors welcomes nominations from Members for these Fellowships, with a closing date of February 24, 2023.

See https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/QM0-C1WLPxcpVlVwOHLZkBm?domain=metabolomicssociety.org for further details. The Board will consider only complete nomination packages, and these consist of the four items mentioned on the web page.

Metabolomics Society Career Medals

We are excited to continue the Society awards which seek to recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals to the field of metabolomics through the presentation of up to two Metabolomics Society Medals. These awards are open to all Society members who meet the eligibility criteria. While research contributions are of primary importance, other contributions, including the teaching of metabolomics and/or service to the field or the society will also be strongly considered. There will be up to two medals awarded each year in the following categories:

  * The Metabolomics Society Medal is for mid-career members of the Society and is open to those members who have been awarded a PhD 10-15 years prior to the closing date for nominations in each round. In 2023 this means your PHD must have been awarded between 2008 and 2013.

  * The President’s Award recognizes outstanding achievements in metabolomics. It is available for Society members who have been awarded a PhD no more than 5-10 years prior to the closing date for nominations in each round. In 2023 this means your PHD must have been awarded between 2013 and 2018.

Education & Training Committee

The field of metabolomics is highly multidisciplinary and non-standardised. Education and training programs provide an important opportunity for novice metabolomics researchers to develop the content knowledge and skill sets required to complete their projects. To maximise the potential of these programs, they must not only implement pedagogical best practice but also overcome contextual challenges. The Metabolomics Society’s Education & Training Committee recently published a paper to provide guidance in this area. Join the authors of this paper for a discussion on pedagogy and teaching considerations in metabolomics.

Hosted by: Roy Goodacre
Panellists: Cate Winder, Michael Witting, Fidele Tugizimana, Stacey Reinke

Update from the Board: Affiliation with MDPI

Those of you who were at our Town Hall meeting in Valencia will remember we had detailed discussions on current and future affiliation with a journal or publisher. Those with long memories will know that from 2005-2015, the SpringerNature journal Metabolomics was the Official Journal of the Metabolomics Society, after which our society affiliated with MDPI’s Metabolites in 2019. Over the last few months, the BoD have been discussing how we evolve our publication strategy for the future. At our last Board meeting, we unanimously voted to disaffiliate with MDPI, so we have freedom to look at options that are suitable, and which our membership (i.e., you) feel happy with. Michael Witting who is Chair of our Publications Committee will be leading the Society’s future publication strategy and if you have any views on where you might like your Society to go with respect to a journal or publishing group, then please contact Michael.
