Dear All,

Here is a brief summary of 28th Jan meeting.

We welcomed several new groups to the Metabolomics Network:

1. Andrew Wotherspoon, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), described the vison of an MS facility, probably located on the RPA site, for the analysis of radioactive samples, typically from patient studies. It would have a wide range of applications including investigating drug metabolism.

2. Chris Liddle, Westmead, gave a brief summary of their 30+ years' experience in investigating bile acid metabolism. Typically they use a targeted approach on a 5500 QTRAP to follow over 100 different metabolites, but are interested in developing untargeted methods.

3. Andrew Merchant and David Fuentes, Centre for Carbon, Water and Food, Camden gave a brief overview of their expertise and set up.

4. Ian Luck, School of Chemistry sent his apologies, but also sent a couple of powerpoint slides summarising their NMR setup - the slides are in the dropbox.

I gave a short presentation of the MSMS-All approach Sam Connolly & David Maltby have worked up to investigate plasma lipids which in a small pilot study was able to map many hundreds of lipid species, and certainly looks like it has great potential as a method. The slides are in the dropbox.

The new mailman mailing list is up and running. We currently have around 18 people subscribed, so please encourage people to sign up if they have not already done so. There is a link to the list from the MSCF Contacts webpage.

In general discussion there was support for future meetings with the frequency of around one every 2-3 months with the various sites taking it in turns to organise and host meetings.

Kind regards,

Ben
