Dear all,
Two PhD positions in Geodynamics are open at the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Life Sciences (SEALS)<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/fe87Cnx1jniXPwlp6h9WyZq?domain=uow.edu.au> of the University of Wollongong (UOW)<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/TshRCoV1kpfDg9lpKIzZ4WA?domain=uow.edu.au>. The first position is on the link between the evolution of mantle convection, sea level, global landscapes, and Earth's climate over tens of million years. The second position is to investigate the effects of mantle convection on the magnetic field as the inner core grew, and possible links with the evolution of complex life.
Both positions are available now with a flexible start date from July 2024. Each PhD scholarship (2024 rate: AU$34,000/yr) is available for 3.5 years, which is the expected time to obtain a PhD at UOW. The research of the successful candidates will be supported by UOW and by external funding from the Australian Research Council. This support includes computer equipment, travel to conferences, and travel to visit research collaborators.
If someone you know is currently studying geophysics, physics, Earth sciences, or another similarly quantitative discipline and is interested in applying these skills to better understand the evolution of our planet, then one of these PhD opportunities could be the PhD for them.
To obtain admission to UOW's PhD program, candidates will need excellent marks (equivalent to first-class Honours) in their undergraduate degree and must have completed a research thesis (e.g. Honours, Masters, MSci) of similarly high quality. For the positions relevant to this advertisement, candidates should demonstrate knowledge of solid Earth processes and quantitative skills, and programming skills (for example, python) are highly desirable. Further information about the application process and the PhD program in Science at UOW can be found at: https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/gyWtCp81lrt9VkQExfYALpY?domain=coursefinder.uow.edu.au.
To apply, please send an expression of interest to Nicolas Flament (nflament at uow.edu.au<mailto:nflament at uow.edu.au>) with the subject line 'Expression of interest - PhD in Geodynamics', and including the following documents (in pdf format):
1. A cover letter including statement of research experience and interests, indicating which PhD topic you are applying for (maximum two pages)
2. A CV, including contact information for at least two references
3. Copies of your academic transcripts
Best regards,
Nicolas
