Dear Colleagues,

I would like to draw your attention to a mantle modelling Postdoctoral Research Associate position opening in the Mantle Geodynamics research group at Cardiff University. This is the central element of a 4-year NERC funded Large Grant Project involving 9 UK Universities to develop and constrain mantle circulation models to better understand mantle upwellings. The successful candidate will work in a substantially multidisciplinary environment in close cooperation with all others.

The earliest starting date is 1 October 2020. The position is funded for 4 years.

Below is a short description of the Project, and the position.
To apply – go to https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/LliLCQnMBZf87PMWixtNT-?domain=cardiff.ac.uk.
Then click on Academic vacancies and search for 10031BR: Research Associate in Mantle Circulation Modelling EARTH.

Please pass this message on to those who may be interested. Please note the closing date of 28 August 2020 at 5pm GMT.

Many thanks.

Best regards and stay healthy!

Huw

Research Associate in Mantle Circulation Modelling

The School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Cardiff University is a dynamic and successful multi-disciplinary centre devoted to research in the disciplines of Earth and Ocean Sciences

Applications are invited for a 4 year Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) funded Postdoctoral Research Associate position. This position will form the central part of the NERC Large Grant Project – MC2 – ‘Mantle Circulation Constrained (MC2): A multidisciplinary 4D Earth framework for understanding mantle upwellings’. The Principal Investigator of MC2 is Prof. Huw Davies.

Working with Huw Davies the role of the Research Associate is to use numerical mantle circulation models to better understand mantle upwellings. The interdisciplinary 4 year MC2 project, will bring together constraints from mineralogy, seismology, core dynamics and paleomagnetism, dynamic topography, petrology and geochemistry to constrain these mantle circulation models over the past 1 Ga, but especially the past 300 Ma. This project will involve the PDRA in close collaboration with Investigators and Research Associates at the University of Bristol, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, University of Leeds, University of Liverpool, University of Oxford, Royal Holloway University of London, and University College London, and with project partners at ANU, Bern University, ENKI, Lille University, Strasbourg University and Sydney University, and industrial project impact partners.

In addition to these duties, the RA will be expected to produce work of publishable quality for appropriate high-quality peer reviewed journals, present papers at national and international conferences, develop outreach opportunities related to the MC2 project, and contribute to the development of collaborative research grants.

The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant subject. Expertise in numerical modelling and mantle studies is essential.

This position is full time (35 hours per week). It is available from 1 October, 2020 and is a fixed-term appointment until 31 September 2024.
