Giant Magellan Summit 2026
AAL and the ANU are both Founders of the Giant Magellan Telescope Organisation (GMTO), which is building a 30-metre class Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) along with 14 research institutions from the United States, Chile, Brazil, Israel, South Korea, and Taiwan. The ANU and AAL have around a 5% share each in this billion dollar project and Australia is reaping benefits from this investment via support from the GMTO to deliver advanced instrumentation for the GMT including GMTIFS<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/AddIClx1NjiAX2N9nTGf9Tzp2WM?domain=giantmagellan.org> and MANIFEST<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/vr-gCmO5gluAWjN0JTOhXTRG5sd?domain=astralis.org.au>.
GMTO will be hosting the Giant Magellan Summit 2026, a one hour event on 14 April. The Summit will be broadcast live across the world and they will provide an update on progress and the future plans for the GMT. They will also introduce the new President of the GMTO, Daniel Jaffe.
While the timing is less than ideal for Australia (it starts at 4am AEST/2am AWST on Wed 15 April), the event will be recorded and a link to the recording will be provided afterwards. Nevertheless members of the Australian community are encouraged to register in order to submit questions in advance to the featured scientists and leaders. All relevant details can be found at: Giant Magellan Summit 2026<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/_BlQCnx1jniKm7NyOFNipTJFdFW?domain=summit.giantmagellan.org>.
