Title: SKA: a global telescope & the role of ECAs
Speaker: Prof. Naomi McClure-Griffiths
Abstract: The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is one of the world’s most ambitious scientific projects: a global radio telescope spanning two continents, designed to advance our understanding of the Universe, from the formation of the first stars and galaxies to the nature of gravity and magnetic fields, and the search for life. With construction now underway in Australia and South Africa, the SKA is also redefining how international science is organised, drawing on the expertise of thousands of scientists and engineers worldwide. This talk will provide an overview of the SKA, highlight its key science goals, and discuss how Early Career Astronomers (ECAs) can engage with and contribute to the future of this global observatory.
Bio: Prof. Naomi McClure-Griffiths is a radio astronomer, a professor at the Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics, Australian National University in Canberra, and the first chief scientist of the SKA observatory. She completed a bachelor's degree in physics with honours from Oberlin College and then earned a PhD in astrophysics from the University of Minnesota. She then moved to Australia to join CSIRO's Australia Telescope National Facility and then moved to ANU. Very recently, she was appointed as the chief scientist of SKAO, where she is leading the observatory's science strategy to maximise overall scientific return. Her research explores how atomic hydrogen gas, magnetic fields, and feedback from stars shape the structure and evolution of the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. She led the discovery of a previously unknown spiral arm of the Milky Way and has played leading roles in large-scale surveys with the Australian SKA Pathfinder (GASKAP and POSSUM). She also has ample experience in supervising and nurturing young talent with more than 50 PhDs, master's, and postdoctoral researchers. She has received various awards and honours, including the Malcolm McIntosh Prize in 2006, the Pawsey Medal in 2015, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2022, and the Astronomical Society of Australia’s Ellery Lectureship for Outstanding Contributions to Astronomy in 2025.
