Hi all,

In case you didn't receive this via other means, just a reminder that virtual registration is still open for the IAU General Assembly this year. I think Outlook has corrupted the formatting a bit in my forwarded email below, but you can see the full info here:

https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/XwO0Clx1NjiOBQvGVTG530D?domain=mailchi.mp

This is the first (and possibly, will be the only) GA that has dedicated substantial effort to ensuring a full hybrid experience for all content alongside dedicated virtual offerings for online attendees, plus it is also the first time the GA has ever been to the African continent. If you were ever going to join a GA, particularly remotely, this would be a good one to support!

You can register here:
https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/CsyLCmO5glu1mOrXghO5fyj?domain=astronomy2024.org

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions - I've been involved in advising on the technical side for the GA both in terms of functional hybrid approach and value-added online experience.

Thanks
Vanessa

Join us virtually, from wherever you are!

The 32nd IAU General Assembly is the first to offer full online participation with a focus on providing a positive experience for those joining from around the world. We're trying to push hybrid conferencing to a new level and we want you to be part of it. It’s not too late to register as a virtual attendee and experience the broad suite of offerings available to our hybrid audience!

What does virtual registration include?

As a virtual attendee, you’ll have access to many different elements of the conference, and we’ve specifically considered the online experience throughout the planning of the meeting. We are using a mix of platforms to suit different kinds of interaction experiences, as indicated below.

Your virtual attendance grants you:

1) All meeting/stream content for the full duration of the GA

2) Access to interactive Zoom sessions to present talks and ask questions live

3) Active participation in hybrid poster presentation sessions via Zoom

4) Full access to the IAU GA Oxford Abstracts conference platform

5) Full access to the IAU GA Slack space

6) Full access to the IAU GA Spatial immersive venue

7) Participation in dedicated online-only events across time zones

8) Participation in dedicated watch parties for social events

9) Participation in networking events and initiatives

Your virtual registration fee is also supporting the IAU GA’s vision of enabling access and participation globally, demonstrating the possibilities for feasible hybrid engagement. Your support and involvement is greatly appreciated!

Explore, connect and collaborate in Spatial

Design your alter-ego avatar and join the virtual IAU venue, consisting of multiple event spaces to explore where you can meet and chat with other delegates. The virtual venue will be hosted on Spatial, which can be accessed straight via your web browser, smartphone app, or VR headset. Let’s really meet in virtual space!

What kind of events can I join?

Alongside the diverse and exciting scientific content, we are coordinating a number of events for our virtual attendees to participate in via the Spatial immersive platform. You’ll be able to go on tours of telescope facilities, visit outer space, complete quests around the venue, take part in networking sessions, join a virtual conference photo and watch events together.

In addition to dedicated events, you’ll be able to chat anytime to fellow delegates in Spatial, check out a virtual Cosmic Echoes exhibition mirroring the physical display in Cape Town, explore the venue at your own pace, and even host meetings in one of the dedicated virtual venue meeting rooms.

In Cape Town, we are aiming to bridge the gap between the in-person and online attendees where we can. All posters will be e-posters and available to all attendees in the conference platform, and poster sessions will be conducted hybrid in the exhibition hall. We are also exploring the possibility of roaming Zoom rooms where online attendees will be hosted by an in-person volunteer to explore the venue, and other ways to bring online attendees to Cape Town. Stay tuned for more!

Do you have any ideas for online events or initiatives you’d like to contribute or suggest? We’re open to hearing your ideas for organising meetings in the Spatial venue or other creative ways of bringing the virtual community together. Please feel free to get in touch with us!

The Future of Meetings (TFOM)

The Spatial immersive venue is being designed and developed by “The Future of Meetings” (TFOM) community of practice, as a partner of the IAU GA. The vision of TFOM is a world that is increasingly accessible, inclusive and sustainable thanks to the benefits of advancing technology, and they work with groups and organisations worldwide to explore online and hybrid approaches to interaction.
