Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the fourth call for joint Australia-eROSITA_DE projects which will be open until Friday 29th September 2023. This call follows three previous successful calls for joint projects under the agreement between Australian-based astronomers, represented by Astronomy Australia Limited (AAL) and the German eROSITA Consortium (eROSITA_DE).
At the end of 2021, the eROSITA (extended Roentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) instrument completed its fourth survey of the full sky at X-ray wavelengths. Although the eROSITA instrument is currently in safe mode, the existing eROSITA data already surpass those coming from previous all-sky X-ray surveys, having much greater depth, image quality, and spectral coverage. The eROSITA data offer the opportunity to study extremely energetic events across vast scales in the Universe, from accreting binary systems at stellar scales to 10-million-degree shocks driven by galaxy cluster mergers.
Australia-eROSITA_DE projects will:
* Require the use of products associated with both the eROSITA_DE survey and Australian surveys/facilities.
* Involve at least one member from each of the eROSITA_DE survey and an Australian Institution
* Not be in conflict with existing eROSITA_DE or Australian projects
* Adhere to the existing policies for the individual facilities involved (e.g. proprietary periods, data access, survey teams, observing time, publications)
* (Optionally) Allow participation by undergraduate and postgraduate students

How to apply
The proposal process is described on the AAL eROSITA Project Application webpage and p<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/VFCuC81V0PTX7yEgrcwi6JZ?domain=astronomyaustralia.org.au>roposals should be submitted via the Google form: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/5dz5C91WPRTz5wDj1S03zKU?domain=forms.gle
New for 2023
Joint Australia-eROSITA_DE projects require approval from the relevant eROSITA_DE Science Working Group<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/PZgRC0YKPvikRApz8CrDPuE?domain=astronomyaustralia.org.au> before they can be accepted. In the past, we have required new proposers to seek this approval directly before submitting this form. This year, proposers have two options: 1) submit this form without WG approval and AAL will facilitate seeking the approval with the relevant eROSITA WG, or 2) submit this form with WG approval and upload proof of this approval to the AAL Dropbox<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/uypBCgZ0N1iqLzDJkSyxvL7?domain=dropbox.com>. The goal of adding option 1) is to help streamline project submission. We welcome feedback and suggestions regarding this change.
Questions
If you have any questions on this proposal opportunity, please do not hesitate to contact Vanessa Moss, Australian eROSITA Science Lead (vanessa.moss at csiro.au<mailto:vanessa.moss at csiro.au>) or Kate Barnard, AAL Technical Secretary (kbarnard at swin.edu.au<mailto:kbarnard at swin.edu.au>).
We look forward to receiving your submissions.
Thanks,
Shona Madoc, on behalf of the AAL/eROSITA_DE Management Committee
