Dear Colleagues,
Please share this opportunity with any interested students.
We invite well-qualified students of any nationality to apply to the PhD program at Curtin University's Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) based in Perth, Australia. In support of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), this program focuses on radio astronomy or radio astronomy engineering. We have a wide range of potential PhD projects <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/fqX_CQnMBZfXDBgjKIxFA5G?domain=astronomy.curtin.edu.au> to choose from (nominally three years with a possible six-month extension).
CIRA forms one half of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/-TNVCROND2uGKnoqpFN8Rp1?domain=icrar.org>), a joint venture between Curtin University and The University of Western Australia. Curtin University operates the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/gnxICVARKgC240moEiyf1xe?domain=mwatelescope.org>), the precursor to the low frequency component of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/ScLcCWLVXkU6pzZmQTn1g4s?domain=astronomers.skatelescope.org>), and supports a large research group spanning radio astronomy (galactic, extragalactic), pulsars, accretion physics, studies of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR), and radio astronomy engineering research including significant participation in developing systems (hardware and software) for the SKA. After the launch of the SKA Observatory as an intergovernmental organisation in 2021, construction is anticipated to begin later this year.
Please note that there are 11 scholarships (two for International students only, eight for domestic only and one open to anyone). The application for these scholarships is a two stage process:
Review the projects listed here <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/fqX_CQnMBZfXDBgjKIxFA5G?domain=astronomy.curtin.edu.au/>. Prospective students should submit an Expression of Interest (EoI) for a given project by following the APPLY HERE link beside each project. Students are encouraged to contact the potential supervisor beforehand to find out more about the projects. These EoIs must be submitted by Friday 11th August 2022.
If a student is the preferred choice for a given project they will be invited to proceed with the full scholarship application. The deadline for this is Friday 25th August 2022.
CIRA is committed to equity and diversity and encourages applications from all qualified candidates.
Included Benefits: The total annual scholarship package (stipend and tuition fees) is approx. $60,000 - $70,000 p.a. The stipend is valued at $32,250 p.a. (2023 rate).
Regards,
Nick
