[ASA] ALMA Services Affected by Cyberattack

Dear Australian ALMA users,

Further to the below, I’d had reports of emails to staff at alma.cl bouncing. I asked ESO about this:

The ALMA Regional Centres (ARCs) are the interfaces to the community.
Users should therefore contact their ARC in case of issues or questions,
not the JAO staff. If the bounces are due to replies to Helpdesk tickets
via e-mail, then indeed this is an issue we are currently facing and
users are advised to use the Helpdesk interface for their communications.

We wanted to inform you about an unfortunate event at the Joint ALMA Observatory in Chile. Last Saturday the observatory suffered a cyberattack on its computer systems. This has also been published in an announcement on the ESO website today: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/YpcoCmO5glu5zBL8OfO-PZ1?domain=eso.org

The attack did not compromise the antennas or any scientific data but it has forced the suspension of astronomical observations, left the observatory with limited email services, and the website as well as some user services are offline.

At present it is not possible to estimate a date for a return to regular activities.
