  Dear Colleagues
   As a member of Science and Technology Australia, the ASA sends a small
number of members each year to Science Meets Parliament (i.e. we pay the
registration fees). In addition to these, STA is offering further
scholarships for this year's virtual SmP, for which you are eligible as ASA
members. Please see the email below for details, and also the STA SmP
webpage
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/v_vXCk81N9tOzR0BET2AERA?domain=sta.eventsair.com>
.

   If you are interested in attending the SmP event on behalf of the ASA
then *please email me ASAP*. Our Vice-President Joss Bland-Hawthorn will be
attending and we would like to send one or two early or mid-career
researchers as well. Diversity in representatives is important.

   Cheers all
    John L

in conversation with another scicomm superstar, Wiradjuri astrophysicist
Kirsten Banks. We will have further announcements in coming weeks about
more of the superb sessions and brilliant speakers ahead. Book now to

STA has unveiled the science and technology sector’s 2022 election
priorities
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/adFaCmO5glujN7YlxIBdBVc?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au>.
Setting the policy agenda, this blueprint was the product of STA’s annual
Presidents and CEOs leadership dialogue. We’ve highlighted our push for
deeper investment in R&D and a new Research Translation Fund in my comments
in widespread media
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/43zgCnx1jni7N1LDEIZ3t5V?domain=theguardian.com>
 coverage
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/zscSCoV1kpfr31GYnfO5XQg?domain=armidaleexpress.com.au>.
STA President Jeremy Brownlie also noted in the *Australian Financial
Review*
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Wnz1Cp81lrtn3JLo2h2Qmqw?domain=afr.com>
that deeper R&D investments are needed to enable science and technology to
drive Australia’s climate transition.

We were honoured to give evidence to the Senate inquiry on manufacturing
last week, noting STA’s proposals for a Research Translation Fund
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/vOWjCq71mwf8jxrNQTqjrn_?domain=campusmorningmail.com.au>,
bench-to-boardroom
scientists
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/MUkKCr81nyt8lzjZqTQzCru?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au>,
and extending
the patent box to clean energy technologies
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Y-DACvl1rKi7zPg89IwICBN?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au>.
STA Policy Chair Sharath Sriram joined our President and me to give
testimony
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/yPAiCwV1vMfG34QxjslSdUQ?domain=linkedin.com>.
We were delighted to see Sharath recognised as a finalist for the AFR’s
emerging leaders in higher education award – check out his opinion piece
here
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/ONB2CxngwOf1og0vlIxikn2?domain=afr.com>.
We also welcomed
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/MH2uCyojxQTr5QWo1fgT1LC?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au>
this week’s announcement of $111 million in quantum technologies.

This is our last STA Member Update before Jeremy Brownlie hands the STA
Presidency to Mark Hutchinson. On behalf of the whole STA community, we
thank Jeremy for his tireless leadership of this organisation and the
sector – and his remarkable 11 years of service on STA’s Board. We have
been blessed to have a leader of his vision, skill, kindness and grace in
the Presidency in the extraordinary years of a global pandemic. We will
have more to say on this at the AGM.

Finally, if you haven’t already, please register ASAP to attend the virtual
AGM <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/49UHCzvkyVCMoyBq1cx9BuY?domain=sta.eventsair.com> – or
register a delegate to represent your organisation. We need a strong
turnout to ensure quorum.
Until next time,

Misha Schubert
CEO, Science & Technology Australia

"...it’s a human story that builds to a climax and it’s personal from end
to end.
You start out wondering why you bought those blue pajamas and later you’re
wondering why you were born. You go from the foolishly absurd to the deadly
serious and you’ve passed through the gaudy and the nasty along the way.
You get to the edge and you’re played out and you wonder where’s the good
news? Isn’t there supposed to be good news?"
