Dear Colleagues,
Please note the job ad below for an ASTRO 3D position working on Hector science. The application deadline is coming up soon (15th August). Please circulate to any others who may have an interest in this position. Note that for this position visa sponsorship is only available for candidates already in Australia. Anyone who has queries about the position should feel free to contact me (scott.croom at sydney.edu.au).
Best regards,
Scott Croom

ASTRO 3D Postdoctoral Research Associate
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A) to undertake research on galaxy evolution and integral field spectroscopy using the new Hector instrument to be commissioned in 2021 on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, as part of the ARC Centre of Excellence for All-sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (ASTRO 3D), under the guidance of Prof. Scott Croom, Prof. Joss Bland-Hawthorn and A. Prof Julia Bryant. ASTRO 3D is a $40m Research Centre of Excellence led by Prof. Lisa Kewley. ASTRO 3D is funded over seven years by the Australian Research Council and supported by six collaborating Australian universities - ANU, University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, Swinburne University of Technology, University of Western Australia and Curtin University. Other Australian partners in the Centre include CSIRO, the Australian Astronomical Observatory and National Computational Infrastructure. ASTRO 3D includes collaborations with world leading international institutions.
The ASTRO 3D mission is to produce a comprehensive picture of the evolution of matter, the chemical elements, and ionizing radiation in the Universe from shortly after the Big Bang to the present day. ASTRO 3D trains the next generation of scientific leaders and conducts nationwide education and public outreach programs.
This position, within the School of Physics at the University of Sydney, is for 2 years (with a possible extension of up to 1 year). The research focus is on exploiting data from the new multi-object integral field spectrograph Hector, being deployed on the Anglo-Australian Telescope in mid-2021. There will also be opportunities to conduct research on other related integral field surveys. The specific science program will focus on analysis of the emission line data from the Hector survey. This will include using the high spectral resolution of Hector to identify and quantify galactic scale outflows. The successful candidate would also be expected to contribute to the operation of the Hector survey, for example, through observing and/or support of pipelines.
Visa sponsorship for this position, if required, is only available for candidates who are currently located within Australia.
All applications should be made through the University of Sydney recruitment webpage linked below. Applications should include a covering letter addressing the specific selection criteria as well as the contact details of three academic referees.
Applications can be made directly through this link<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/dlLDCgZ0N1iA060vlINUoWw?domain=usyd.wd3.myworkdayjobs.com> or through https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/viq9CjZ1N7in5E5zjuRw-5L?domain=sydney.edu.au<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/viq9CjZ1N7in5E5zjuRw-5L?domain=sydney.edu.au> and searching for position number 0083390.
