Dear colleagues,
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/1PXGCQnMBZf51G61sxNVqj?domain=project.lsst.org> and their US
funding agencies have now developed a structure for international
collaborators to be an active part of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time
(LSST <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/CHOCCROND2uAD9rDTNvRc0?domain=lsst.org> ), which is expected to commence in
late-2023. The LSST data will be available to international collaborators on
the same basis as to US and Chilean astronomers under a negotiated contract,
where in-kind data, services and facilities are provided to the US
astronomical community on an agreed basis. Under AAL, a Letter of Intent was
submitted to the agencies late last year outlining a range of possible
contributions that Australia could provide. A response has now been
received, and we have until September 25 to respond with a more detailed
proposal, which will provide a basis for negotiations for a data rights
agreement. A working group under AAL has been established to prepare and
submit the proposal.
To date 38 Australian astronomers have expressed an interest in being part
of the Australian proposal. Each PI supported by the Australian agreement
will be able to bring a further 4 junior researchers into the project. The
in-kind resources provided to the US community to support these PIs can be
provided partly by AAL, but will also require dedicated support from the
wider community. Please contact Stuart Ryder
(stuart.ryder at astronomyaustralia.org.au) if you would be interested in being
further involved.
