Dear ASA members,

It is with sadness that I deliver the news of the passing of Dick (Richard) Hunstead on Thursday. Dick was a very well-loved and well-respected member of the community for many years.

He also served, and was honoured by, the ASA, including being the 3rd Ellery Lecturer in 1995, Editor of PASA from 1989-1991, and served as an ASA Council member from 1991-1993. In addition, Dick joined the ASA as a student member in 1966, the Society's inaugural year.

Dick has many enduring legacies, but his commitment to training and inspiring the younger generation of astronomers is a role in which many of us knew him. He was the former head of the Sydney Institute for Astronomy (SIfA) and the Director of MOST. Scientifically, he had significant contributions to the fields of quasars, galaxies and the Lyman-alpha Forest.

There will be a celebration of Dick’s achievements, scheduled for Friday 14 February. The booking link is: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/yn3ECvl0PoC7jyQlDHQhr2t?domain=eventbrite.com.au

This was an event that was already organised to occur, and so the program and venue may need adjusting. I have also attached some words about Dick, prepared by his colleagues in the School of Physics.

Our thoughts are with friends and family of Dick in this difficult time.
