Dear colleagues,

We are delighted to welcome registrations for X-Sensing 2019: a cross-disciplinary conference on machine learning and scientific analytics.

The conference will now take place during 25 - 29 November 2019 in Coffs Harbour, NSW. We pushed the original dates back from September to take full advantage of exciting developments with our generous sponsors: Fujitsu Australia, NVIDIA Australia, The NSW Office of the Chief Scientist and Engineer, CSIRO, Nearmap, Sphere Drones, Southern Cross University and Macquarie University.

The conference comes in two parts (see below) and participants are invited for either or both parts. We have a limited number of places available and expect to hit this limit, so please register early to ensure your attendance is guaranteed. Registrations received after we reach the limit will be put onto a wait list.

What is the X-Sensing Conference?

The 'cross-sensing' conference aims to unite scientists from diverse fields with industry professionals and experts in artificial intelligence. The week-long meeting is divided into two parts: a 2-day training workshop and a 3-day cross-disciplinary conference, centred on a hack day.

The training workshop (Monday and Tuesday) will host tutorials in data-science methods and machine learning. We will be covering a number of topics (listed on the website) at an intermediate level, using Python.

The cross-disciplinary conference (Wednesday - Friday) will host invited speakers and participant talks, but is largely focused on a hack-day designed to bootstrap cross-disciplinary projects. On the hack day, you will have access to:

  * Experts from industry and academia in machine learning, statistics, data-science, drones, satellites, aerial imaging and advanced sensors.
  * On-site computing resources, including NVIDIA DGX GPU clusters for training machine-learning models.
  * Edge computing hardware, including Raspberry Pis.
  * A range of sensors and cameras.
  * 3D printers for creating custom parts.
  * Some drones - large and small.
  * Selected GIS data and 3D aerial imagery from Nearmap.

Who is the conference for?

The conference is for data-focused scientists working in a wide variety of fields: astronomy, biology, linguistics, ecology, archaeology, geology, geography, medical imaging, sensors and many others. All these fields face similar 'big data' challenges. The training workshop aims to teach data-science and machine learning techniques. The conference aims to be a cross-disciplinary research accelerator, seeding exciting new science projects.

Why should you come to this conference?

You should definitely come to this conference if:

  * You want to learn how to incorporate machine-learning into your research.
  * You are interested in starting a cross-disciplinary project.
  * You are a creative thinker and want to be inspired by research in other fields.
  * You are considering a career in industry and want to build your network.
  * You want to spend time in a creative environment to spark ideas.

Each field brings unique perspectives so opportunities for cross-pollination will result in advances in new directions and greater efficiency to solve current problems. The conference will help build a dynamic community of industry-connected scientists with the skills to leverage the power of artificial intelligence.

Invited Speakers

We are lining up fantastic speakers to inspire you help you achieve your hack-day goals.

  * Dr Michael Bewley - Senior Director of AI Systems at Nearmap
  * Dr Ilana Feain - Scientific Commercialisation Specialist at CSIRO
  * Associate Professor Shawn Ross - Director of e-Research at Macquarie University

Travel Support and Child Care

Limited funds are available to support travel to the conference as well as to offer child care support for conference attendees. Please email organisers at x-sensing.net<mailto:organisers at x-sensing.net> with a short justification of your request for support. Preference will be given to students attending the conference.

Best regards,
Cormac Purcell
On behalf of the X-Sensing organising committee.
