To all ASA members,
All members will soon receive the first of several notifications about ASA membership renewal which is due on 1 January.

This year we have introduced a new ASA membership status for International members to recognise their lesser ability to engage in ASA-supported activities. It will reduce the cost of membership to encourage members who leave Australia, especially recent PhD graduates, to stay engaged with the ASA and the Australian astronomical community. The membership fee is now the same as the Student membership, less the 10% GST.

Most international members have been automatically moved to the new status and should receive an appropriate invoice. Hopefully it will all work as expected - please let me know if you see any issues.

If you have recently moved overseas and the system doesn’t know, please update your address details and send an email to request a move to international status.

Retired members are now also handled the same way. Please let us know if you have recently retired and should have your status changed.

Finally, I would like to remind you all about the Foundation for the Advancement of Astronomy (FAA) - see https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/w5wuCp8AJQtwvwRZsP30GV?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au The FAA is the ASA’s channel for accepting tax-deductible donations. These donations are moving the FAA to the point where the recently expanded set of ASA Prizes is financially sustainable in the long term. Donations also allow us to consider new initiatives to support the astronomical community. Any suggestions for initiatives are always welcome (the international memberships is a recent example).

Best wishes for the coming holiday season and the new year.

John
