[ASA] ASA Council statement on marriage equality in Australia

Dear ASA members,

As you will know, the Australian Government is currently undertaking a voluntary, non-binding survey on same-sex marriage.  Council recognises that the debate on marriage equality during this period may be difficult for many members of our community - we would like to offer support to those affected, and encourage all ASA members to similarly support your colleagues and students.

We take this opportunity to reaffirm the ASA members code of ethics, which begins with the statement that “members of the Society should promote equality of opportunity and treatment for all their colleagues, regardless of gender, race, ethnic origin, religion, age, marital status, sexual orientation, disabilities, or any other reason not related to scientific merit.”

With these values in mind, Council members express their support for marriage equality in Australia.
