[ASA] Teacher Workshop & Student Astronomy Education Conference

Dear ASA Member,
 
I wish to advise the ASA that Atherton State High School in Far North Queensland will be hosting two significant programs around the Total Solar Eclipse in November.
 
Hands-On UniverseTM 2-day Teacher Professional Development Workshop – Thurs 8th & Fri 9th November
30 middle and junior secondary science/maths teachers will explore a variety of pedagogical methods and classroom activities related to the context of astronomy that can easily be adopted to facilitate enriched learning and promote higher-order thinking skills in mathematics, science and technology in students of all ages.  Dr Carl Pennypacker form UC Berkeley will be facilitating the workshop at Tinaroo Lakes resort on the Atherton Tablelands.  

Student Astronomy Education Conference Tues 13th to Fri 16th Nov – “Under a Darkened Star”
·             124 students from around North Queensland (and elsewhere) will participate and interact with professional astronomers through lectures, workshops and astronomy related activities.
 
·             Buses will take the students and teachers/supervisors to the Totality Centre Line on Tuesday afternoon before the eclipse to a private property which has an airstrip available for setting up telescopic and recording equipment.  
 
·             The astronomers will be setting up telescopes along the Esplanade of Lake Tinaroo for Dark-sky and solar observing.
 
I would like to extend an invitation to ALL ASA members who would like to participate.  Additional professional help would be appreciated - or you may just like to watch the eclipse.
 
There are also placed available for high school students and undergraduate students.
