Dear all,
The International Association for Critical Antiquities (IACA) welcomes the submission of abstracts for its inaugural conference to be held in Paris, France, 21-23 June 2027. The IACA aims to foster research and collaboration at the intersection of the academic study of critical theory and ancient worlds, broadly understood across diverse historical periods, cultural traditions, and disciplinary approaches.
The IACA builds upon and extends the collaborative foundations established by the Critical Antiquities Network (CAN) to support scholars, students, and independent researchers working internationally in the study of Critical Antiquities. Its concern is examining the ways antiquity and contemporary social, political, and cultural questions may illuminate each other. More information about the Critical Antiquities approach can be found at criticalantiquities.org<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/8Oi5CE8wmrtnRxwq7SNfG9s71DXc?domain=criticalantiquities.org>.
The IACA welcomes submissions that advance the interdisciplinary exchange among scholars working across philosophy, classics, history, political theory, archaeology, law, literary studies, religious studies, anthropology, and other relevant fields. We are committed to developing innovative approaches to the study of antiquity that move beyond narrowly antiquarian or disciplinary concerns, while remaining attentive to historical specificity, cultural difference, and the complexities of interpretation.
Open Call:
Please send abstracts of roughly 250 words. If selected, presenters should plan papers of appropriate length for a twenty-minute conference presentation followed by a brief period of discussion. We hope to gather an inclusive group of speakers from multiple backgrounds and a diversity of academic ranks; we especially encourage submissions from scholars belonging to underrepresented communities in their field of study. All abstracts should be submitted at the following link by 11:59pm (CET) on 1 December, 2026: Submit an Abstract - 2027 International Association for Critical Antiquities Conference<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/Kri5CGv0oyCqj4r87T7hmGsBeNnq?domain=forms.cloud.microsoft>
All papers will be peer-reviewed and may address topics including but not limited to slavery, debt, law, democracy, authoritarianism, social collapse and renewal, religion, and the methods of Critical Antiquities.
While the conference will run in a hybrid format to allow online audience attendance, please note that all presentations are to be given in person.
All participants will need to be current members of the International Association for Critical Antiquities in order to register for the conference. Both association membership and conference registration will open in early 2027.
