Assoc. Professor Kathryn Welch Finding Marcus Antonius

For all his fame, Marcus Antonius the triumvir remains an elusive figure. This paper, representing the first chapter of a longer study (which is not quite a biography), tries to grapple with the problem of how differently he was characterised in the ancient source tradition and whether one characterisation should be preferred to others when they cannot be reconciled. I take two central points of comparison - the first being how each relevant author introduces him and the second being how they variously treat his first “big” moment, his oration at Caesar’s funeral in March 44 BCE. My first contention is that there are traces of a voice and a character in almost every other author that belie the hapax (simple) easily led character that Plutarch describes in his Life of Antonius (ch. 24). My second contention is that Antonius himself contributed to the confusion along with everyone else.

Bio
Kathryn Welch is an honorary Associate Professor in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney. Life and other research projects have for many years prevented her from working on her Marcus Antonius project but the time has come to get it done.
