Iphthime and Creusa: Two Images of Female Figures in the Odyssey and the Aeneid

Abstract:
In the Odyssey and the Aeneid, there are two ‘images’ of female figures who speak: Iphthime and Creusa. Iphthime is the first female ‘image’ in Homeric epic. Homer uses the word εἴδωλον at Od.iv.796, 824, and 835, in reference to her. The εἴδωλον is a copy of the living Iphthime, and this sets this ‘image’ apart from all other ‘images’ in the Odyssey. While there is a parallel to the ‘image’ of the living Aeneas in Iliad V.449 and 451, the ‘image’ of Iphthime will be shown to have further capabilities and function in the narrative. The ‘image’ of Creusa is described as a simulacrum, an imago and an umbra at Aen.II.172-3. Like the ‘image’ of Iphthime, the ‘image’ of Creusa moves, speaks and responds to questions. This paper will examine the use of the word εἴδωλον in Homeric epic, the words simulacrum, umbra and imago in the Aeneid, and how these words are used in relation to Iphthime and Creusa. It will also compare the usages of the words in relation to other figures in the respective epics, thereby showing the distinctiveness of the ‘images’ of Iphthime and Creusa in their narratives.
